Abstract

This study was performed to contribute to the understanding of Women¢¥s health. The purpose of this study was to identify degree of menstrual symptom, acceptance of sexual role and to investigate the relationship between them.
The subjects for the study were 704 woman college students in Seoul who had experienced menstruation. Data were collected by an 80 item questionnaire from March 15 to April 17, 1999.
The instruments were the Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire developed by Moos(1968), and the Role-accept scale developed by Palson(1956).
Data were analyzed by the SPSS Win program and included descriptive stastistics, Pearson Correlation Coefficient.

The conclusion of this study are summarized as follows ;
1. The mean score of menstrual symptom was 82.66 in a range of 47 to 168. Among the menstrual symptom categories, pain group was most frequent, mean 2.12, followed by behavioral change, water retention, negative effect, autonomic reactions, concentration, control, and arousal.
2. The mean score of acceptance of sexual role was 45.22 in a range of 28 to 56. The most negative attitude toward acceptance of female role was "Menstruation is an annoying inconvenience", the most positive attitude toward acceptance of female role was "Breast feeding is better for children than bottle feeding".
3. There were significant positive correlation between menstrual symptom ¡Æ and acceptance of sexual role(r=.188, p<.01). All menstrual symptom categories except arousal were significant positive correlation with acceptance of sexual role. These results indicating a higher number of symptom of menstrual distress report a significantly lesser acceptance of the female role.
